The Domain
Name System or DNS make it easier for users to work their way around the
Internet. A user anywhere in the world can reach a specific website address
just by entering its domain name. Translating
the domain name into an IP address e.g., 192.168.1.1, is called "resolving
the domain name". Domain names are also used for reaching e-mail addresses
and for other Internet applications.
TLD
TLD registry organizations maintain online databases that contain information about the domain names in that TLD. As an example, in yahoo.com, the com part is known as a Top Level Domain, or TLD. Domain Registration
The Domain Name System( DNS) allocates the responsibility for assigning domain names and mapping them to IP networks by letting an authoritative server for each domain to keep track of its own changes, avoiding the need for a central registrar to be continually consulted and updated. When you register a domain name, it goes through a domain registrar so the name could be added to the domain list. Domain names are usually registered for a minimum of one year, although you are permitted to buy up to a 10-year registration contract. Usually the longer the registration contract, the lower the price, so if you are sure you will be on the web for a considerable length of time you can benefit from a longer registration period
